Cabinet minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan has been accused of racism over a coronavirus-related Chinese “joke” she made on WhatsApp.
The International Development Secretary sent an image of a fortune cookie showing the broken-English message “You not have coronavirus” to a group containing fellow Tory MPs.
The image, which she forwarded from another chat, also bore the words: “Just received my COVID-19 rapid test kit from CHINA! soooooo relieved!!!!!! Thanks beijing!!!!”
An MP forwarded a screenshot to the Sunday Mirror, saying: “This should cost the minister her job. It’s an appalling example of old-fashioned stereotypes.”
As International Development Secretary, Ms Trevelyan, is in charge of delivering £13.4 billion in foreign aid.
After the fortune cookie image, she sent the message “Just for Bob” with a winking emoji – an apparent reference to fellow Tory MP Bob Seely, who is campaigning against Chinese tech firm Huawei supplying kit for the UK’s 5G network.
He responded with heart and smiley face emojis.
Mr Seely told the Sunday Mirror: “It was a well-meaning joke at my expense and I didn’t think anything of it.”
‘This sort of humour was left in the 1970s’
However Labour’s Sarah Owen, the UK’s first female British-Chinese MP, strongly disagreed.
She told the newspaper: “If Anne-Marie Trevelyan doesn’t understand why this sort of humour was left in the 1970s, I would be happy to explain it to her.
“In recent weeks we’ve seen East Asians spat at, beaten up, verbally attacked and had their businesses targeted.”
Ms Trevelyan is the MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, and has held the seat since 2015.
In 2018 the Brexiteer resigned from her post as a Parliamentary Private Secretary over Theresa May’s draft EU withdrawal agreement.
In July last year she was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence, and was promoted to Secretary of State for International Development by Boris Johnson in February 2020.
