Yachts or CAT Scans?

Richard Bratten (Your View 10 February) points out that an ageing population is the primary cause of the crisis in the NHS and this should have been foreseen.

I am sure it was but society has said it is preferable that one person should be allowed to accumulate so much wealth that they can buy a super yacht costing 25 Mill Pounds as an occasional toy, rather than that the money should be spent on 60,000 CAT Scans.  If this is what people really want, they will have to get used to the idea of paying for their medical care or accepting a deteriorating free service.
