Simon sips some tea, pauses, studies the other faces and then offers the following comment – ‘Dissolving Parliament? I’d be happy with just dissolving Cameron, Osbourne, Clegg & Cable in hydrofluoric acid.’

‘Cable’s comments came after Cameron suffered an unprecedented – and embarrassing – rebuke from the Office for Budget Responsibility for claiming in a speech on Thursday that his deficit reduction programme had no impact on growth.

‘Robert Chote wrote to the prime minister saying the government’s austerity programme had knocked 1.4% off GDP in the past two years.’
